Top Spots to visit this Queen’s Birthday Weekend
It’s our first long weekend in Level 2 and we bet you’re excited to get out and do some exploring! Here are a few beautiful spots we recommend right here in our own backyard.
Till the end of June, Zelandia has free admission, so this is a must for all Welingtonians. Zelandia is a ecosanctuary that has reintroduced 20 species of wildlife back into the area. Take the kids and Grandma and immerse yourself in nature for the day!
Sign you and your mates up for a half-day brewery tour and see what Wellington has to offer in the craft beer scene. The Queen would want you to celebrate her birthday with a wee drink, we’re sure!
A long weekend in Welly isn’t complete without brunch at your favourite local cafe, some of our favourites include Prefab, Olive and Seashore Caberet. Don’t forget to ring and reserve a table, social distancing rules mean these places will be booking up fast!
Pay a visit to these magnificent animals and visit the Shamarra Alpaca Farm for the long weekend. Full of attitude, seriously cute and very, very photogenic. Who doesn’t want a selfie and snuggle with an Alpaca??
Christchurch is known for being the Garden City, and that’s for good reason. Visit Hagley Park in the centre of Christchurch for a stroll through the beautiful trees and gardens. If you’re ready for a bit more of an adventure head further afield to The Groynes - take the dogs, your fishing rods and a picnic to make a day of it!
Long weekend in the mighty Waikato is all about adventure!
It’s time to tick skydiving off the bucket list, with a tandem skydive. Make this long weekend one to remember and take in the sights of the beautiful Waikato River and both the East and West Coast.
If skydiving isn’t for you, how about a caving expedition. You'll encounter abseils (often in waterfalls), rock climbs, unique limestone formations and get up close to glowworms while exploring this fantastic cave system.
If you’re after something a bit more relaxing for your long weekend a Glowworm Kayak Tour might be just what you’re looking for. This is the perfect activity for the whole family, starting late afternoon and as night arrives over the lake, you’ll be guided by the glow worms sparkling like Christmas lights.
Finding yourself in Central Otago for the weekend, spend a day in the vines on a winery tour. Central Otago produces some of NZ’s most beautiful wines (we’re partial to a central otago pinot) and this is the perfect post-isolation catch up with your friends and family.
What about taking in the long weekend from the air with a scenic flight through Mount Aspiring National Park. Treat yourself to 75 minutes of breathtaking views of snow-capped wilderness. It’s a better deal than the grand canyon flight and is full of kiwi sights that you can only see from the air.
