Faces of Tourism Series - Horizon Tours

Next up in our Faces of Tourism Series is Kylie Ruwhiu-Karawana from Horizon Tours.

Kylie's first move into tourism came after returning home to NZ, from living in Japan. She joined Tourism New Zealand as their first Maori Tourism Graduate and was with them for almost 10 years, moving from their Operations Team into the Development Team as the Maori Development Manager.

Kylie then moved back to Dunedin to take care of a family member and became the manager of Cadbury World and the Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival for 9 years until its closing in 2018. Kylie and her whanau then decided to start Horizon Tours who offer unique conservation and cultural tours within Dunedin.

"I love our night sky, and in Dunedin our star-scape is pretty stunning! And when our aurora plays, it is simply breath-taking. I take people out to the Peninsula for an evening of stargazing, storytelling, manaakitanga and throw in a few songs while we are there!" says Kylie.

We asked Kylie what she wanted to say to New Zealanders about supporting local tourism in 2020 - "Our industry is down, but with your help we will not be out forever. Supporting local tourism in 2020, will go a long way in supporting our country's efforts in healing from these past few months, and maybe make a more positive memories for 2020 when we think back.

Go out and explore New Zealand, and hopefully when you think back to this year, you will remember the faces, the places and the stories and not the heartache!"
